Hiring landscape employees: Selecting and onboarding the best people

During a labor shortage, all eyes should be turned towards hiring and training landscape employees. People are the key to the success of any business and it’s a challenge landscapers face on an ongoing basis. Unfortunately, it’s an issue that doesn't seem to be ending soon. Although it is not a problem that can be controlled, you can certainly do your best to manage it. Luckily, there is a way to manage this problem.

Recruiting & Retaining Talent

Selecting and retaining the best people is a real challenge. After all, everyone wants to work for a winner. Your employees want to learn and grow, and it involves a good training program. Not only will it entice new employees to apply, but when people know that a company believes in their personal growth, it will encourage them to not consider this a JOB, but a career with a clear path. With the right training and tools, B Players can become A players. The same can be said for C players. Choosing the right candidate can make all the difference. With the proper tools and training, anything is possible. According to the 2018 Workplace Learning Report by LinkedIn, the #1 reason employees say they are not engaging in workplace learning is because they don't have the time. Executives and people managers agree that getting employees to make time for learning is the #1 challenge for talent development. With this fact, it is hard not to pay attention to the importance of training. Check out our story “Does Training Make a Difference?”

Onboarding

Onboarding is the process employers use to help employees to become more acclimated in the workplace and bring them on board with regard to company culture, job function and overall experience. Depending on who you ask there are many styles of on-boarding a new hire, but there is one that is more common and effective than the rest. Training. It sounds too on the nose, but it has become ignored over the years.

According to a survey conducted by SHRM, one-third of new hires left their jobs after only six months. Training has been proven to improve upon efficiency, longevity, and safety. With a successful on-boarding and training program, employees will learn how to effectively do their job and stay longer. On top of that, training helps avoid costly mistakes. They are less likely to occur, making the business more reliable, and everyone can appreciate that. This reduces overall costs. Jobs will take less time when they are performed correctly, creating more time for other jobs to be completed.

Aspire’s integration with Greenius provides supervisors with the tools they need to ensure that training is being accomplished. Greenius provides online training for landscaping crews and has already educated over 80,000 workers in the United States and Canada. The integration allows you to document and manage/regulate training programs, pay-rates, certifications, safety performance, and equipment training history and proper records. Supervisors will be able to view who has completed training and who has not. The two systems will drive up accountability and identify the most valuable members of crews.

With a busy schedule, it can be difficult to take time out of the day to work on training. However, with Aspire and Greenius, training can become systematic and easy to measure, ensuring that all players are getting the training they need to perform at their best. Commitment to improvement is proven to pay off with clients.
